History and Development of Triathlon in Uzbekistan
Triathlon in Uzbekistan began to develop in the early 1990s. In 1991, the first triathlon section was established within the Republican Sports and Technical Club for Water Sports. Starting from 1993, the Tashkent Committee for Physical Culture and Sports began organizing championships in this sport. In 1995, a triathlon department was opened under the “Vatanparvar” organization, and Uzbekistan joined the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and the Central Asian Triathlon Association (CATA). The first national competitions were held in Tashkent, Termez, Navoi, Karshi, Andijan, and Samarkand.
On March 7, 2019, by decision of the National Olympic Committee, the Uzbekistan Triathlon Federation was established and officially registered with the Ministry of Justice on May 3 of the same year. This marked an important milestone in the development of triathlon and launched a comprehensive nationwide program to promote the sport. The Target Program for the Development of Triathlon in Uzbekistan for 2019–2024 was approved, aimed at the systematic development of both professional and amateur sport, national team preparation, and the creation of regional branches.
The Federation established cooperation with the Uzbek State University of Physical Culture and Sport, opened a specialized triathlon department, and signed memorandums with the cycling, swimming, and athletics federations to jointly develop the Elite category. As part of the development program, a Military Triathlon division was created under the “Dynamo” sports society of the National Guard. New sections were opened in youth sports schools, along with regional federations in the Kashkadarya region and the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
Special attention has been given to women’s participation in sport. In 2020, WomenTriClub was founded — the first free project in Central Asia for women interested in triathlon. The club was established by Elena Kun, Secretary General of the Uzbekistan Triathlon Federation. Today, the club unites more than 250 participants and actively promotes women’s triathlon in the country.
To promote mass sport and a healthy lifestyle, the BeFitTri club was launched in 2021, bringing together triathlon enthusiasts of all ages. It has become a platform for regular training, competitions, and preparation for national and international events.
In 2023, the Uzbekistan Triathlon Federation acquired the international franchise Challenge Family, becoming the first organization in Central Asia to join this prestigious global series. The inaugural event — Challenge Samarkand 2023 — gathered more than 2,000 participants and became a significant milestone in the development of triathlon and sports tourism in the region.
In 2024, Samarkand successfully hosted the Triathlon and Paratriathlon World Cup, with more than 100 top athletes from 40 countries, including Olympic champions. In September of the same year, the second international Challenge Samarkand event took place, bringing together more than 2,000 athletes from 25 countries.
Today, the Uzbekistan Triathlon Federation is implementing a five-year strategy for the development of youth and mass sport, establishing regional centers, strengthening cooperation with the IOC, NOC, ITU, and CATA, and training a new generation of coaches and specialists. The Federation’s goal is to make triathlon a массовый (mass), accessible, and prestigious sport while strengthening Uzbekistan’s position on the international stage.
In 2025, the Federation continues to actively develop triathlon as a mass and accessible sport, expanding the geography of competitions and engaging more participants across the country. The number of regional events is increasing, work with youth sports schools is being strengthened, and support for promising athletes on the national team is growing. Particular attention is paid to improving the quality of event organization, training referees, and developing volunteer movement. A sustainable sports environment is being formed, where triathlon becomes part of an active lifestyle for people of all ages and levels of training.
In 2026, Samarkand will host one of the key international events — a stage of the World Triathlon Championship Series. This confirms the high level of event organization in Uzbekistan and the trust of the international sports community. Hosting such high-level competitions contributes to the development of sports infrastructure, attracts international participants and tourists, and further strengthens the country’s image as a center for major international sporting events. The Federation continues to implement a sustainable development strategy aimed at increasing participation, improving athletic performance, and integrating into the global triathlon community.
